<p><i>Question:</i></p>
<p>Years ago I attended a seminar where we were presented with logical proofs that the Torah was delivered to us by Moses at Sinai. I was convinced and began a path towards complete Jewish observance. After many years and much thought, I (and many of my friends who were similarly convinced) realize that every one of these proofs is flawed, including the classic proof of Rabbi Yehudah Halevi in the <i>Kuzari</i>. I continue to practice as an orthodox Jew, but I do not have faith in the ideology.</p>
<p>My question has to do with being called to the Torah and making a blessing that says “He has chosen us from all the nations and given us His Torah,” when I do not really believe that this Torah in front of me is the one given to Moses. Am I permitted to make this blessing if I do not believe what I am saying?</p>

<p><i>Response:</i></p>
<p>I have to agree with you that there is no scientifically flawless proof that the Torah we have today is exactly what Moses wrote. It’s obviously so, since there is no real science of history, of proving anything in the past.</p>
<p>At one time history was thought of as the retelling of traditions. It is within that context that the proof of the <i>Kuzari</i> that you cite was formulated, basically saying that the tradition with the most witnesses wins. With the rise of the natural sciences in the 18th century, physics-envy drove many scholars to attempt to mold history into a science as well. In the 19th century it was a widely held belief that a scientific approach to history would eventually uncover, in the words of Leopold von Ranke, “how it actually was.”</p>
<p>But science is about reproducible experimentation and observation, and history is about things that can never be reproduced or observed. So in the 20th century the idea of history as a science came under serious skepticism. By 1964, Alan Richardson was able to write, “No one believes that historical judgments can be ‘proved’ after the fashion of verification in the natural sciences.”<a class="footnote_ref" href="javascript:doFootnote('1a748106');" name="footnoteRef1a748106">1</a> Today the only historians who still cling to the belief that they are really scientists are those antiquarians who engage in “biblical criticism” (supplemented with related studies of archeological artifacts) in their attempts to “prove” or “disprove” the Biblical account.</p>
<p>Many of the “facts of history” that are commonly accepted today are really quite questionable. Just take a look at how newspapers today report events around the world as they are happening. How can anyone then have faith in the history we reconstruct from fragments of copies of copies of documents, traditions and artifacts from thousands of years ago? Rather, history is more an art than a science, a form of interpretation of traditions, relic documents and scattered artifacts.</p>
<p>True, there can be overwhelming evidence for a particular event. Specifically, when there is a strong tradition that is accepted by a large population, and that tradition is not directly in contradiction to any evidence to the contrary. Such as is the case, as far as I can tell, with our traditional belief that Moses wrote the Torah. It makes sense that Moses wrote the Torah, since that is the simplest and best explanation, and it is a strong tradition that lay uncontested for millennia. We have plenty of evidence that a phonetic alphabet was already in use at the time. We see that the style of the text matches the style of documents from that time period. We see that it provides an accurate account of matters for which we have external evidence. (For one example: In Genesis 37:28, Joseph is sold “for twenty pieces of silver.” Kenneth Kitchen, in a fascinating article in <i>Biblical Archeological Review</i><a class="footnote_ref" href="javascript:doFootnote('2a748106');" name="footnoteRef2a748106">2</a> presents evidence from other Near Eastern texts that this was the going rate for a slave in the Old Babylonian period—just around the time of the event, but not before and not after. In fact, slave prices in later biblical texts are higher, in keeping with the trend recorded elsewhere.)</p>
<p>The Torah also provides accounts in a style that is hard to imagine someone writing at a later date—such as the detailed accounts of the building of the Tabernacle and the census of the people. These accounts read precisely as we would expect a compilation of accounting scrolls to read, certainly not as a fictional narrative.</p>
<p>We see that the Torah narrates events that a later chronologist would be very uncomfortable describing—such as the failures of the heroes of the stories and the people as a whole. Then there are accounts of marital relations that were later forbidden. Why would an author later than Moses want to write that Jacob married two sisters, when this was already forbidden by the law of Moses? Or that Abraham claimed to have married his half-sister—likewise forbidden? Or that Judah and Simeon married Canaanite women, and Joseph married an Egyptian? Books written in the 19th century about the 17th are full of anachronisms, but the Torah preserves the idiosyncrasies of each era.</p>
<p>In general, the Five Books of Moses have the style of someone obsessed with detail and accuracy—even when those details are overtly embarrassing and inconvenient. (For a thorough treatment of this topic, see Provan, Iain W., V. Philips Long, and Tremper Longman III, <i>A Biblical History of Israel</i> (Louisville: Westminster John Knox Press, 2003).)</p>
<p>The line of tradition is also fundamentally reliable, since there is plenty of evidence (not proof, but strong evidence), archeological and otherwise, that the Jews were always a literate society obsessed with preservation of traditions.<a class="footnote_ref" href="javascript:doFootnote('3a748106');" name="footnoteRef3a748106">3</a> Since the Torah was in the public domain of a literate populace, it would be difficult for significant changes to fall into the text. As well, there was always a central authority with a Torah scroll from which to check any variance.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, anyone resting their faith on historical evidence of facts alone—even in this case—is building a home on the swampy banks of the Mississippi. Faith cannot be based on evidence of an event of the past, no matter how strong the evidence may be. Faith arises out of your personal life experience. You don’t have faith in your wife because your research into her past demonstrates that she deserves it; you trust her because you know her, personally and intimately. You build a marriage based on trust, not the other way around.</p>
<p>Precisely the same applies to our faith in the Torah. Despite everything they tell you in those seminars, we don’t believe that G‑d gave us the Torah at Sinai because we have proof. Rather, we begin with our personal belief that G‑d is good, that He is purposeful and that there is only one of Him—and we believe all that <i>despite</i> everything we see out there. Then we build from there.</p>
<p>Why do we believe? Because we are Jews and that’s just the way we are. We inherited from our ancestors this integral conviction that He is one and He is good, and therefore life is essentially good and meaningful, and no matter what, we just can’t shuck that off. We can try to run from it, or to transmute it into radical politics, guru-chasing, trendsetting or even extreme corporate climbing. But at the bottom of everything that a child of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob does lies an inherent, simple faith that there’s got to be meaning behind all this somewhere.</p>
<p>Once we recognize that foundation and give it some room to breathe, we look at our history and see it in that light. We ask, “If G‑d is good, why doesn’t He communicate with us?” Well, here’s an answer: He does, through His Torah and through its sages.</p>
<p>Since we are created as semi-rational beings, we need some sort of support for this faith from our power of reason. We look, and we see that it is not unreasonable at all. In fact—if you have no problem with G‑d speaking to man and open miracles—it has more support than any other document from the distant past.</p>
<p>Another way of looking at it: Communication is always a two-party process. I can't say I’ve told you something if you weren’t listening. Neither can I tell you that I've given you a wise path in life if you are bound to forget it. Similarly, G‑d cannot say “I gave them My Torah” if we were doomed from the beginning to change and distort it. So there’s a promise that “it will not be forgotten from their seed.”</p>
<p>Does that promise necessarily mean that exactly the same book will be transmitted down through the centuries without any discrepancy falling in? I don’t think this is an absolute. We see, in fact, that Rashi and others had different versions of certain words and letters. What it does mean, however, is that the Torah the Jewish people make a blessing on today is G‑d’s communication with them.</p>
<p>That’s why, really, your approach of “orthopraxy” is more viable. Your Judaism does not rest on an event of the past, but on your present reality. But I would go further than that. Jewishness should not be reduced to actions alone. There has to be a Jewish experience involved as well. That’s where faith can really rest—on the inner human experience. A Jew needs to find and nurture that faith within that “G‑d is good and there is only one of Him.” He needs to feel an affinity, a closeness and an intimate relationship with that G‑d, with His Torah and with the Jewish People.</p>
<p>So this is where I see your faith right now—tell me if I have it straight: You believe in the Jewish people; you believe in a benevolent, all-encompassing G‑d who created you with a purpose; and you feel that “orthoprax” is good. What you are missing is a meaningful experience of that orthopraxy, in terms of its inner soul and spirit. This is what Chabad attempts to present in terms of intellectual Chassidus and a chassidic lifestyle: not just practice, but an inner, spiritual experience of that practice.</p>
<p>In this, as well, lies the answer to your predicament concerning a blessing on the Torah. Ask yourself: In what do I have faith? In a book? Obviously not—since, as I wrote, no one could ever demonstrate without doubt that this book is the real one. Rather, the Jewish faith is in that abovementioned relationship between G‑d and the Jewish people. Torah is the communication of that relationship, and it is really an ongoing dialogue through the Talmudic approach that continues to be generated along the generations. So if this is the Torah that the Jewish people are saying a blessing on today, this must be the Torah that G‑d communicates to them—along with all the innovations of halachah that have been accepted by the Jewish community at large over the millennia.</p>
<p>I am confident that if you take this approach, eventually you will be able to make peace with the statement of Maimonides that a person who claims that a single word of the Torah was not told by G‑d to Moses, that person is a heretic. For even were it possible that a word may have changed here or there, or fallen away, the Torah that the Jewish people as a whole treasure and make a blessing upon is G‑d’s communication through Moses to His people.</p>

Read the whole Kuzari, the 600K-2M+ people witnessing Har Sinai, plus many cultures actually recording, the shockwaves of that event, isn’t the only “proof”.<br />The history itself lines up perfectly and seamlessly. <br />From Adam-Noah-Shem-Ever, Abraham-Moshe-Dovid-Shlomo- from then, the archeological, and written, historical documents corroborate that Jews were living in Israel, and many other cultures in the area, and from there to other places all over Europe have been corroborated with countless archeological evidence, ie Jewish, artifacts, Hebrew artifacts ect. <br />Adam-Noah, easy, The flood. Many many cultures, have recorded the flood.<br />Dispersion that’s when everyone spread about different languages. Tower of Babel. Jews kept the holy language, Shem and Ever taught it to their kids.<br />Exile to Egypt, redemption from egypt, into Israel.<br />I’ve met many people that have been related to Rashi, or the Shelah Hakodesh, Rebbe, who can trace they’re lineage perfectly to Moshe, Aaron, Korach ect.

There is something that can be (sort of) reproduced: What is the effect of the Torah on its recipients? Does it make them good or, at least, better, with time and commitment to listening? Unfortunately this requires peering into hearts, which we can’t all do consistently.<br /><br />(Yet again the path to clarity seems to be to focus on understanding the other.)

Hi<br />Great Article<br />Actually the Lubavitcher Rebbe does quote the classic Jewish argument which is the concept of historical proof - namely we all believe Goerge Washington existed as this is our tradition - and the more people that witness an event the greater the accuracy and never have there been less than 600,000 descendents of the orginal people who actually witnessed, recorded, and annually celebrated (3 times a year)

We know that the written Torah has stayed the same since inception because of the rule that if even one letter is off we need to fix up or bury the scroll. So if this rule has been like this since the start, we know that the entire scroll has always had the same writing . #deepseascrolls?

While I agree the absence of proof isn&#39;t proof of absence, this article seems to be focused on confirming evidence, thus missing evidence offering other explanations. To wit, it relies on the Kenneth Kitchen article saying the price for Joseph (20 shekels of silver) matches the going price at that time of Mesopotamian history, while the price was lower before the 18th c. BCE and higher later. But the Kitchen article is flawed. Slave prices fluctuated over time. Read, e.g., &quot;Drought and the fall of Assyria: quite another story&quot; by Arkadiusz Sołtysiak (2016). The chart on p. 10 of the article shows the range of prices between 700-612 BCE, during which prices for male slaves range from 1/3 mina (20 pieces of silver) to 3 minas, with most being in the range of 1/2-2/3. While the average price was higher than 20 pieces of silver, it was not out of the range. Does this mean the Torah was writen in the 7th c. BCE? No, but it could have been, with the story reflecting a realistic rate.

Thanks, I am not familiar with that book. To me, historicity is irrelevant. I have one Orthodox brother who believes that everything in the Torah post-flood is historical, while another Orthodox brother prefers not to even ask the question because he believes it is a matter of faith and doesn&#39;t want to challenge that faith with historical anachronisms or inaccuracies. My understanding is that the literary style of the Torah matches that of other ancient writings in which multiple and contradictory accounts can co-exist because the ancients weren&#39;t hung up on historical accuracy like humans are today. What counted was the message, not the facts.

If there was absolute proof of an unknowable there would be no freedom of choice, defeating the entire program . There would no room for faith . The Torah says choose life. G-d wants us to choose life, he doesn’t want to coerce us. Islam is a religion of coercion. Ours is the religion on conscience. No mystery means no choice. There can be no logical proof of metaphysical beliefs. There shouldn’t be. If wouldn’t be much fun. Drop the desperate attempts at kiruv proofs and worship God and follow his Halacha and study His Torah and learn to live with uncertainty. A great master of chasidus explained to me that faith ( emuna) is a sense , the fifth sense , a chush, not grounded in logic. Our doctrine is that by learning Chasidus , the inside and essence of Torah, we reveal in ourselves our essence ( penimius nishmasha) , our Godly essence. Then you don’t believe because of this or that logical reason , only to unbelieve wheh a prettier non proof comes your way. Then you believe because

"Bad" news. Even with "absolute proof," people still make bad choices. Smokers know that. Heavy drinkers know that. Dieters know that. Bullies know that. Speeders know that. All kinds of people know that. Eve knew G-d up close & personal & still chose wrong. Depending on how you define "faith," there a Jewish positions which hold Judaism is ANTI-FAITH IF you define faith as blind belief. If you define faith as emunah, emunah is related to exercise/practice, meaning we exercise/practice SEEING G-d as Creator, Sustainer & Supervisor (I think Designer could fit into this catergory). If people are happy NOT following the Torah, then why choose it if they are already "choosing life?" Ramchal posits since the universe is FINITE (!!!), everything within it is knowable which means mystery is, at best, temporary. There can also be no logical proof of metaphysical RULES because, unlike physics, whole processes are not usually visible. Not understanding something isn't always "fun." <br />Not everyone is wired so they can "drop proofs" & just "worship G-d & follow His halakha & study His Torah & learn to live with uncertainty." Rationalists do NOT hold EMUNA is a chush (feeling/sense). Far from it. They hold it's looking for patterns/clues of His existence. Kuzari deals heavily with this & Rabbi Yehudha HaLewi has more weight as a rishon. What happens when chassiduth does NOT reveal one's inner neshama? The 3 categories of G-d in the universe are Creator, Sustainer & Supervisor. If a proof is destroyed, the category still exists. I just means that PROOF was wrong, not the category, no different than forensics in a court case.

The “proof” is that you can go to any country , in any shull and it’ll be the same exact Torah everywhere , as for the “Bible” and “Quran” there 100s of thousands of different ones. <br /><br />Also the Torah it’s self dose not have 1 single human error ,both written and oral Torah contains information that only the creator of the world could know

Yes with the Written Torah, but it gets more complicated for me with the Oral Torah. It doesn&#39;t seem to be a clearly defined thing, its a mystery to me where it begins and where it ends, what it includes and doesn&#39;t include - which is entirely dependent on with whom I would study it.

That&#39;s EVIDENCE! I wouldn&#39;t say it&#39;s &quot;proof.&quot; That&#39;s an indication that 3600 (or whatever date) ago, there was one common text. That&#39;s NOT a proof for Who wrote it. How many versions of the US Constitution are there? One. Therefore what? The US Constitution doesn&#39;t have errors, therefore what? Your last idea is very strong. How could an earth-bound, time-bound author know the list of non-kosher animals with only one kosher sign (either split hooves OR cud-chewing), for example?

It’s a good proof just not absolute. There can’t be absolute by definition of Judaism . There can’t be absolute proof of much in this world but certainly not of inherent unknowables. These proofs are helpful to people but this is and is supposed to be a religion of faith.

Gemara in masechet brachot I believe states the exact number of stars in the galaxy that was around a 19 digit number .. nasa was also able to come to this same number using state of the art equipment.. <br /><br />Let’s keep in mind that this was first written around 2000 years ago in the oral Torah And About 1800-1900 years before a telescope was even invented. <br />

There are no doubt some amazing things written in the Gemara. I do not dispute that. However is that the Oral Torah? Is all of Gemarah the Oral Torah? Some of it? A lot of it is written as &quot;Rabbi X says this and Rabbi Y says that&quot; and it is just stated as their own teaching, not an oral teaching received by Moses from God. I am not able to understand this.<br />The explanation I usually get that the Oral Torah was never written down directly but the Mishnah and Gemarah and the important teachings that came after it are &quot;reflective of the spirit of the Oral Torah&quot;. What am I to make of that?

My Mashgiach in Miami, R Lazer Teitlebaum A’H told me many years ago that ours is a faith based religion. Emuna is a sense, not an intellectual belief. It’s not supposed to be capable of proofs. The various proofs can be useful but relying on proofs means you can be swayed by counter proofs. A person with emuna ( whose emuna is manifest as we all have it) cannot be swayed by counter proofs and has no interest or need for proofs. Another great mashpia said to me that learning penimius haTorah - chasidus- reveals penimius of the soul. The Rebbe wrote me about this in 1977 and said that emuna comes from increased dedication and devotion in learning Torah and doing Mitzvos. Those are my marching orders. The Rebbe did not tell me to look at any proofs. Nor did he ever mention proofs publicly that I heard. I know the Rebbe did write endorsing the Kuzari- I assume the person the Rebbe write to needed that.

Kuzari is a basic text in chaqira that also deals with proofs to the Kuzari (the Kuzari king), so you&#39;ve just undermined your whole argument.

It’s “ historical fact” written in a text 3300 years ago. Here I am today after the enlightenment and given a text I’m told is the word of G-d and he will not reveal his presence again as he did then. If the text is true those Jews knew that G-d is God. Is he bible has too many inconsistencies that I can except. I was born into a conservative Jewish life and over the decades of my life as an oncologist and palliative care specialists, I do not see a deity that intervenes in the lives of mankind. Nothing! I wish it was different but my faith has vanished

Your deity intervention comment is a straw man argument. The Torah nowhere says that G-d will intervene in every tragedy in a way that satisfies you, so you need to take that off the table. Ahhh, what&#39;s the nature of proof? If I keep piling up more &amp; more evidence on the table, when does it become proof? Kelemen brings scholars that say that the Torah bring historicity, meaning, archeological records match the Torah&#39;s claims as far as what was going on in daily Middle Eastern life (I recall him applying that to Egyptian slavery, different occupations there &amp; lists that match the Torah). Jewish DNA largely shows one origin. There are papyrus records that record incidents in Egypt that are strikingly similar to the 10 plagues. There are pages &amp; pages of such evidence. When you are on a jury for a murder trial &amp; there is a preponderance of evidence, when do you say &quot;guilty,&quot; even though there&#39;s no smoking gun proof? Without a smoking gun, what would it take for you to convict someone in court?

Within the universe, G-d set up rules of interaction between Himself & humanity. He gave us air, water, delicious colourful food, colourful flowers and sunsets and mountains and forests and deep blue oceans. Beauty gives us pleasure, but how necessary is it? Why does food have to be physically appealing and delicious? Why did G-d create flowers that are beautiful? Why is there a basic human consensus on what makes a beautiful face? Why did G-d enable the possibility of music, of harmony? Why does physical closeness, even without intimacy, feel good? Why does physical intimacy feel good? These are all pleasures that G-d gave and GIVES to humanity. Giving is goodness. You’ve focused only on ONE Name of G-d. Y-H-W-H focuses on mercy. Mercy is goodness, giving a second chance to someone who really doesn’t deserve it. On one foot, this is my case for supporting G-d is good. HOWEVER, beyond “creation,” meaning, in the Infinity that exists AROUND the finite universe, “G-d is.” It is only within the finite universe where G-d created the list of pleasures I mentioned above in order to facilitate a relationship with His creation. Since they don’t exist in the Infinity beyond the creation, there is no one there to receive those pleasures, then, “THERE” you can speak of “I am what I am.” That’s because Infinity is not comprehensible by finite beings.

Unlikely doesn&#39;t mean not true. But Jewish history is unlikely. 25% of Nobel Prize winners come from a desert people. How come Bedouins from the desert don&#39;t win such prizes? How come the two largest countries in the world, India &amp; China, don&#39;t have such large percentages? And it&#39;s not only that, it&#39;s Jewish contributions to CIVILIZATION are WAY out of proportion to numbers. Why haven&#39;t Jews vanished like the ancient Hittites? Assyrians (they&#39;re around, but extremely small)? Cana&#39;anites?

I know the Torah is true because on the eve of Passover, my father told me a story that his father told him, which his father had told him. This continuous retelling of the story from generation to generation is proof to me that they were there and we were there.

De facto, they didn&#39;t show up at Sinai, that rejection. The door is still open. With that, when Sarah nursed the infant princes of the world at the weaning of Isaac, that put &quot;something&quot; in them (think of nursing &amp; IQ research), so they had descendants who rejoined Sarah&#39;s descendants as converts to Judaism. In fact, that is the source of their conversion. In addition, 2,400,000 of the mixed multitude (a mixture of different nations who&#39;d settled in Egypt) of Egypt also joined the Jewish People &amp; were accepted by Moshe, though they caused a lot of problems, such as the Golden Calf, but such is Jewish destiny.

Oops, I misread your question.Nations in general don&#39;t preserve negative aspects of their history, unless they have no choice. Rejecting G-d&#39;s offer to have a relationship was a very, very bad choice (there&#39;s a gemara criticizing Babylonian Gentiles who saw Jews sleeping in the street during certain, seasonal Torah-learning sessions that lasted a month, but did NOT convert to Judaism!), so nations would certainly not want to advertise such a decision to reject G-d&#39;s offer.

How is it &quot;obvious?&quot; There&#39;s actually a gemara that states when the Torah was written on limestone rocks upon the crossing of the Jordan River into Israel that messengers WERE SENT to all the peoples of the earth. Interestingly, that&#39;s AFTER the giving of the Torah, it was a second chance.

I’m symbolic. That is the nature of medrashim . That’s what the Ramban explained. And Rambam agrees more vociferously. You are not obligated to believe any particular med rash or aggadita. This is an important principle because of children are taught to believe them all, they will find some too fabulous to be true and could throw the baby out with the bath water

1. Of course it can, and should. Our Chachamim were great men who wrote with Divine inspiration- every Medrash. But if it&#39;s not a historical medrash it can&#39;t serve as the basis for a historical question. <br />2. It could be literal. <br />3.
